Mars 2003: Olympus Mons

Jean-Luc Dighaye

Giant volcano Olympus Mons is a low-contrast surface feature when seen from the Earth. Here are two pictures taken on 15 Sep 2003 using an apochromat refractor 200/1600, a Power Mate 2.5x, a wedge prism of 1° deviation, a 17mm eyepiece, and a Panasonic Mini DV; ca. 300 images selected out of ca. 2500.

Those pictures can be fused together for a őD impression.

Note that Olympus Mons could be glimpsed visually using the same instrument.

The third picture to the right is a HST comparison image taken on 27 Aug 2003.
